One of the inevitable problems in the software sector is the difficulty developers face in timing projects. Recently, I read this book "Scrum - The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time" by author Jeff Sutherland, where we examine the significant impacts of Scrum in the business world. I highly recommend this book for every programmer or manager. The main philosophy of the book deals with how to make teamwork more efficient rather than focusing on processes. When problems in these areas are solved, solutions are also found in the process-related aspects.

Business Planning - Waterfall Method

In the business world, most people make plans using this method and monitor their process improvements based on these plans. The book emphasizes how wrong this method is for the software industry. The reason is that as a software company, the average of what each employee will do in how much time is not measured. Imagine starting a project from scratch. In the waterfall method, imagine that each service item is listed in a sub-ordered manner with start-finish dates. Test at the end how much these people in the team can adhere to this plan. Often the plan remains hanging. Since the planning capacity of each person in the team may be different, there may be a mismatch. Instead, it is considered more appropriate to start with the method of breaking down the work and supported by a scoring system. The scoring system is based on the scoring basis of the tasks. So, a person gives scores while doing the job. For this, the Fibonacci number system is also considered appropriate. A distinction between big and small is also considered appropriate among tasks. So, the employee determines the size of the job. Then, the team starts the tasks according to this determined scoring. As the process progresses, the process management for the started tasks is clarified by the team leader. So, the situation is the same for all projects. Based on the progress of the team, an assessment of the situation is made, and when it will be finished is predicted.
